martin place residences

Our clients – a pair of entrepreneurs in the lifestyle and hospitality scene – have a fine appreciation for design and craft. In conceptualising the apartment at the Martin Place Residences, we wanted to reflect the owners’ love for mid-century modern design and colours, yet at the same time develop a home that was contemporary and purpose-built for their lifestyle and personalities.

In view of their busy schedules, the apartment was designed to serve multiple functions – a home office by day, a calming retreat by night, and a haven for weekend gatherings with friends and family. As such, we broke down walls and adjusted the unit’s layout to create a seamless flow of communal living spaces, connected by a common language of natural finishes, clean lines and vibrant tones.

The dining area consists of a spacious walnut desk that is fit for work and meals, as well as a plush banquette set against a full-height display feature with woven cane panels, echoing the design element of the Chair 811 by TON, based on Josef Hoffman’s design from 1930. In the living area, an Eames lounge chair and ottoman takes centre stage. A treasured birthday gift from wife to husband, the highlight piece complements a bespoke teal sofa custom designed by our studio and upholstered in Maharam fabric. Over at the kitchen, the use of classic mid-century tones continues with sage cabinets and cork-panelled counters.

We similarly adorned the master bedroom with design elements that mirrored that of the communal spaces - a rounded woven cane and fabric headboard set against a wall with cork panelling and timber beaded profiles. The space at the bay window is further optimised with the addition of a cantilevered writing table accompanied by a leather pinboard. A walnut and indigo-stained ash dresser, also designed by our studio, completes the space with its quiet elegance.
